Personal effects and households items are the unaccompanied items transported into Australia, by a returning resident or a new resident of Australia, via sea or air freight.
To import items under the tariff code for personal effects, you must be arriving from a place outside Australia, and the items must be your personal property that you owned while overseas.
Although it's comforting to be surrounded by familiar things when you move to a new country, it's worthwhile doing a thorough review before deciding what to bring to Australia to determine whether the costs outweigh the benefits.
Think twice before bringing any electrical goods. Australia runs on 230V power (50Hz), so you may require transformers and adaptors for them to work in Australia. Australia has some tight quarantine laws, particularly around food, plant and animal material ( see below for full details)

WHY IS THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE INTERESTED IN PERSONAL EFFECTS AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS?

All consignments of personal effects entering Australia are subject to some form of quarantine intervention before they can be released. Because of the risks associated with personal effects, you must advise the department of specific items in your consignment. If deemed necessary, the department will undertake an inspection of your goods. If required the department may ask that some items are treated before they can be released. If treatment is not possible the department may seize and destroy prohibited items, or ask that they be exported out of Australia.

COMMON ITEMS OF QUARANTINE CONCERN

The first rule to remember is that the department will be interested in any item that originated from an animal or a plant (including timber), or contains part of an animal or a plant.
The second rule to remember is that the department will also be interested in any item that has been in contact with animals, plants, water, food or soil.
Please view the list of common items of quarantine concern.  This list is designed to assist you when you are packing your goods up room by room.
PLEASE NOTE: At matthew James Removals we are finding an increase in shipping containers being treated at the Australian Port, this will be charged as extra on top of your shipping / removal costs

AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS CLEARANCE

When your shipment arrives in Australia we will arrange for your personal effects/household effects to be custom cleared. To assist with your customs clearance you will be required to complete an unaccompanied effects statement which is a Australian customs form B534, this can be completed in the UK before your departure or in Australia. If your goods are arriving into Australia before you do, you can nominate a your family member or a friend in Australia to act on your behalf. In this scenario you must complete the Australian customs form B534 yourself before you depart the UK. You will also be required to present the following information to Australian Customs.
  • VISA (Photocopy),
  • Passport (Photocopy for Proof of identity),
  • Inventory, of Items ( completed by our crew at UK address )
  • Australian Customs B534
